Colootola Kebab Walk II – Dilshad Ahmed’s Kakori Malai Kebab

Continuing our food walk in Colootola, the beef kebab street of Calcutta, our next stop is a shop only a few years old. Unlike Abdul Hamid’s khiri and gurda kebab shop, which is in business for more than 80 years, this eatery was started about three years ago. But for the distinct menu and its awesome taste, this place has become my favourite in the Colootola area.

Dilshad Ahmed’s Malai & Dahi Kebab

I still remember the first day I visited this stall, I was looking for Sutli / Suta Kebabs. That day I was in a dedicated mission to try Suta Kebabs from all stalls around that area. When asked if they serve Sutli or not, Dilshad bhai told me he have something else which he is sure I will love. I didn’t give much importance to what he told, but still went on to try kebabs from his stall only for the names – Malai and Dahi Kebabs. I am glad I did. As from that day this stall has become my favourite in the Colootola area.

The three items you will always find here are – Keema Kakori Malai Kebab, Dahi Kebab and Khiri Kebab. And if he gets a supply of good quality kidney, he prepares Gurda Kebabs. The Kakori Malai is my personal favourite here. Absolutely melt in your mouth delicious. And it’s a delight watching them being cooked in front of you. The whitish keema wrapped in the skewers slowly acquiring the colour once placed over the grill and then rolled delicately over clarified butter before being served to you. Break a piece and put it into your mouth. Ahhh! Soft and spicy, these are just awesome 😛

The Dahi Kebabs are Boti marinated with a special yogurt mixture. They are good too. I only wish the pieces were a bit bigger. Same for the decent Khiri he makes. As I am not a fan of Gurda Kebabs, never tasted one here. All the kebabs are priced at Rs.10/- per piece/skewer.

Location

Enter Zakaria street from Rabindra Sarani. Leaving the main gate of Nakhoda Masjid to your left, take the first right turn. Walk till you reach a T junction and take left from there. You will find Md. Jaan High School on your left. And just after that, on your left, will be the stall of Dilshad Ahmed.

If you are coming from Central Avenue, enter Colootola (Maulana Saukat Ali Street) and keep walking till you find Phears Lane on your left. Take the narrow lane opposite Phears Lane, on your right. You will find meat shops in this lane on your left. Just as the lane ends, Dilshad Ahmed’s stall is bang opposite the road.

The shop remains open from 12 noon till 11:30 PM, but it is better to visit after 1:30 – 2 PM as they open late sometimes.

N.B.
1. All kebabs mentioned here are made with beef
2. This is a street side stall and not a proper restaurant

I haven’t heard of these specifically, but these look really good, and I am a big big fan of kebabs. Also, a food walk sounds fun – I would love to do that.

Heavens those sound delicious. I haven’t had a kabob in a long time. I guess I will have to head down to NYC and get one since I won’t be able to get to this particular stall!

That special yogurt mixture looks and sounds delicious. I’ve never had anything like this, but I am sure I would wish the pieces were bigger too. lol That’s how I feel about small treats. Yummy pictures!

This is right up my alley! I love that is is all beef and I don’t think you find all the best food at dining places, side carts and trucks are the in thing!

Those look so tasty! I love sampling local dishes when I travel, but I don’t get to do it very often because my boyfriend is allergic to flour and the times we’ve tried local dishes and they’ve assured us there is no flour, he gets sick. So, we avoid local food. 🙁 But I think I’d have to make him try one of these. They look so good!

This looks great! I love how it is cooked right in front of you. I had my very first authentic kebab a few months ago and loved it. I need to go grab another after reading this post 🙂

Oooh I love kebabs! Especially lamb! What is that green sauce in the first photo? It kind of looks like an egg yolk but for it to be such a neon green I am curious…little local places like this that have been around forever are great, aren’t they!
